Queensland childrens entertainer, Pirate Pete turned 25 in 2014.
The Pirate first appeared with his first mate Charlie the Cockatoo as roving minstrels at the official opening of Underwater World on the Sunshine Coast in 1989.
The pair were regulars at The Wharf fer several years after that providing roving musical entertainment fer locals and tourists.
The Pirate and ‘Bird’ spent a lot of their formative time busking in the Queen St Mall, Brisbane and Circular Quay in Sydney singing sea shanties and colonial folk to passers by.
The Pirate performed at many community functions around Brisbane as well as the Sunshine and Gold Coasts in the early nineties and was a regular feature at the North Pine Country Markets fer seven years where he sang and handed out Pirate Headbands.
He provided the entertainment at more than 450 birthday parties around Brisbane during the nineties..
In 2001 Pirate Pete and Charlie took to the road and began touring Kindergartens, schools, Agricultural Shows and Festivals, firstly in Queensland then New South Wales, the ACT and eventually Victoria.
Performing anywhere between 250 and 300 shows per year between Cooktown to the north Hobart to the south and west to Swan Hill in Western Victoria.
Sadly the first mate Charlie the Cockatoo passed away in 2007 with 18 years of pirating behind her.
The Pirate carried on and is currently in north Queensland on a 60 show in 56 days tour of the Sunshine State that takes in Bundaberg, Childers, Gladstone, Biloela, Rockhampton, Yeppoon, Emerald, Springsure, Dysart, Mackay, Mission Beach, Atherton, Cairns and Maryborough.
This tour is shaping up to be the last of its kind for Pirate Pete.
At the end of this year he plans to take time out after 14 years on the road to write, record and video some new songs.
“We’ve tried and tried to do it all while moving around but it just doesn’t happen….there isn’t enough time” the Pirate says.
“We’ll hunker down in the Pirates Treasure Cave and see what we can’t come up with”
Pirate Pete celebrated his 25th birthday on September 9th 2014 with a leisurely cruise from Innisfail to Maryborough but then its straight back to Pirating at Carramar Preschool on the 10th.
